This year’s ITIC Global in Athens will kick off with a special presentation by global news broadcaster Frank Gardner
Frank has a wealth of experience travelling to some of the most high-profile conflict zones and geopolitical hotspots in the world, reporting on events and finding the stories that matter to news consumers all around the globe.
As a career broadcaster and a witty and gifted communicator, Frank shares his passion for the Middle East, travel and adventure. He draws on a unique perspective and understanding of both domestic and international security, notably on Al-Qaeda-related terrorism. Frank’s own personal story of survival, combined with his extensive knowledge of history, current affairs and politics, make for a compelling speech. Frank was shot six times at close range and left for dead. His cameraman Simon Cumbers was killed.
For the ITIC audience, Frank is going to share his experience of pre-travel risk mitigation techniques and training, and share some of his more hair-raising stories from the front line.
Frank has reported firsthand on terrorism and security from around the Middle East, notably Saudi Arabia and Yemen, as well as Afghanistan, Pakistan, the US, Guantanamo Bay, the Arctic, the Horn of Africa, and the Colombian Amazon. He has given evidence to various UK Parliamentary Select Committees on the conduct of the War on Terrorism. He was awarded the OBE by HM The Queen in 2005 for services to journalism.
He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and his Sunday Times bestseller ‘Blood and Sand’, describing his 25 years of Middle Eastern experiences, was published by Transworld in 2006. His book, Far Horizons, about unusual journeys to unusual places is currently in reputable book stores. His Luke Carlton series of spy novels, of which the latest – Outbreak – was published in paperback earlier this year, are all Sunday Times bestsellers.
